Ikunus
The ninth generation of the family linked to the winery, wanted to offer the most demanding a unique product … hence IKUNUS was born. Everything begins in 2005 with the planting of the vineyard that will bear the fruit for the production of this wine. It is the vineyard that surrounds the winery and is located at an altitude of 690 m. A plant of the native Tempranillo variety suitable for the conditions of the farm was chosen. A high planting density (4,800 plants per hectare) has caused great competition between plants, resulting in small clusters of small, high-quality grain. When the harvest arrives, the best bunches are selected with care and affection to produce a limited edition of approximately 12,180 750 ml bottles and 455 1,500 ml units. The vineyard, located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, was planted by the IKer brothers, UNax and USuri, hence its name.
ELABORATION
Manual harvest. Selected bunch by bunch, the grapes ferment and macerate with their skins for 24 days in a small vat (16,000 kg). The malolactic fermentation ends in new French oak barrels of 225 l (50%) and new French oak barrels of 500 l (50%). 14 months in new French oak where malolactic fermentation took place and refining in the bottle for at least 10 months.
WINERY
After 7 generations of the family linked to the world of wine, Teodoro Unzalu and Mª Felisa Gaztelurrutia built in 1978 the first winery in Villabuena (Rioja Alavesa). In 2006, the ninth generation of the family saw the birth of a project that is the result of enthusiasm, effort and a spirit of improvement; the construction of the current winery in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). Built underground and next to the Sierra de Cantabria, the winery is located at an altitude of 690 meters and surrounded by a 7-hectare vineyard. Currently three brothers Iker, Unax and Usuri are in charge of managing the winery. The important recognitions obtained both nationally and internationally are a sign of the good direction that the winery has taken.
