Carmelo Rodero Pago of Valterreña
Carmelo Rodero belongs to an old line of winegrowers from the riverside town of Pedrosa de Duero. His childhood was spent among vineyards and wineries and his first memories evoke his grandparents making wine in the traditional way. Such was Carmelo’s passion that from his adolescence he began to invest his first earnings in new vineyard plantations, and thus, based on enthusiasm, effort and sacrifice, he managed to form a considerable farm.
Towards the year 1990 he began his own journey, always supported by his wife Elena. Together they bet on the future and quality, knowing that the basis of a great wine is always found in the excellence of its “black pearls” which is how Carmelo loves they like to name the fruit of their vines. All this effort and search for quality has been rewarded with national and international awards for each wine produced since then by Bodegas Rodero. A new generation has joined this exciting project, Beatriz and María, the two daughters of Carmelo and Elena. They have inherited the passion of their parents.
From the vineyards of the Valtarreña family estate, from 45 to 55 years old, which due to their genetic peculiarities and their special microclimate, produce an exceptional ripening in the goodness of their tannins. Calcareous clay soils and cool sands. Grown in glass and trellis with yields of only 3,500 kg per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand in 12-kilo boxes. Fermentation in stainless steel and malolactic tanks in French oak barrels. Aged for 24 months in 225-liter French oak barrels with a selected grain and an average age of one and a half years.
It is a sweet and powerful red, at the same time as smooth and velvety. It is an iron hand in a velvet glove. At sight it is very attractive and already hints that it will be serious. Crisp and bright cherry color. With practically no border, it allows us to predict the long life that is predicted. In the olfactory phase we can find an intense and pleasant range of aromas. Notes that evoke ripe black fruits are mixed with toasted notes, also of leather and coffee. As we go deeper, spicy aromas come to our memory, of wide intensity and high persistence. In the mouth it is very meaty, savory, velvety, structured, fresh and endowed with a great balance. Notes of blackberry, coffee with milk candies, shady forest, pipe tobacco, minerals … It is an eternal wine in sensations that also persist, as it is very, very long.
