Lalomba Finca Valhonta
A fine and balanced charm in the most Atlantic end of La Rioja
Finca Valhonta is born in high, cold and highly defined lands and ferments in concrete tanks designed and built exclusively for Lalomba. After a 12-day post-fermentation maceration, the wine is placed in 500L French oak barrels. where it performs its malolactic fermentation. Aging lasts 14 months in the same barrels and then another eight months in concrete.
ABOUT LALOMBA
Lalomba expresses the authenticity of the vineyard with a collection of three wines from three estates that Ramón Bilbao, Lalomba’s mother winery, has spent years studying and cultivating with care in different locations in Rioja: Finca Valhonta on the terraces of Villalba de Rioja (Rioja Alta ); Finca Ladero and Finca Lalinde on the austere slopes of the Sierra de Yerga (Rioja Oriental).
There are vineyards whose fruit deserves to be bottled separately. Places where wine transparently reflects the specific virtues of that location. Vineyards whose exclusive elements claim to be valued: the sum of soil and microclimate, the persistence of a traditional viticulture, the altitude and the environment, the quality sustained over time. In short, the unique combination of history, nature and landscape.
VARIETY
Tempranillo 100%.
VINEYARDS
The expression of the Tempranillo variety achieves one of its highest levels of harmony and charm in the wide clay-calcareous terraces at the foot of the Obarenes Mountains. Finca Valhonta is born in the highlands, cold and of great definition, surrounded by the forest, a healthy environment and a unique crossing of climates: Mediterranean, Atlantic and continental seem to come together to recreate a world of fascinating finesse.
ELABORATION
The harvest is collected in 250 kg pallets and once in the winery, the grapes go through optical selection grain by grain. During three days a pre-fermentation maceration takes place. Fermentation by yeast from the vineyard begins slowly. At what day selected native yeast is inoculated. The process is carried out in concrete tanks designed and built exclusively for Lalomba.
The maceration and extraction combines delestages and pump-overs at certain times. After 12 days post-fermentation maceration, we gently press and transfer the wine to 500-liter French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. The aging of the wine lasts for 14 months in those same barrels, without any transfer. After that, it goes back to the concrete, for its final refinement. He remains there for eight months. Bottled September 2019.
